He Dreamed of Becoming a Doctor: Pierre Damas Bel Dies at 20
A 20-year-old college student who hoped to build a future in medicine has died in Ohio, leaving his family and community mourning a promising young life cut short.
Pierre Damas Bel, a Haitian national living in Springfield, Ohio, had graduated from Springfield High School in May 2026 and had recently begun his studies at Wright State University.
Bel identified neuroscience as his field of study and hoped to become a doctor.
A PROMISING STUDENT WITH A FUTURE IN MEDICINE
Bel had been active during his high school years. He played football and participated in the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC).
After graduating, he took the next step toward his academic ambitions by enrolling at Wright State University.
His plans, however, unfolded amid growing uncertainty over his immigration status.
ICE FITTED HIM WITH A GPS ANKLE MONITOR
According to information provided by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to American media, Bel was fitted with a GPS ankle monitor on July 29, 2026, while his immigration proceedings were ongoing.
Bel had entered the United States in 2024 through a government-authorized process.
His family says wearing the monitoring device had a profound emotional impact on him.
In a social media post shortly after the device was fitted, Bel described feelings of shame and humiliation. He emphasized that he had come to the United States to pursue an education and said he had not committed a crime.
His father later said his son felt humiliated by having to attend college while wearing the device and had sought to have it removed.
HE DIED ON INTERSTATE 70
The tragedy occurred on August 31, 2026.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Bel stopped his vehicle along Interstate 70 in Springfield and subsequently entered the roadway, where he was struck by a tow truck.
He died at the scene.
His family has described his death as suicide and believes the psychological distress surrounding his immigration situation and electronic monitoring contributed to the events leading up to his death.
However, a direct causal relationship between the ankle monitor and his death has not been officially established. ICE has rejected suggestions that the agency was responsible for his death.
A DREAM LEFT UNFINISHED
Bel's death has attracted attention beyond Ohio, particularly because of his age, academic ambitions and the circumstances surrounding the final weeks of his life.
Only months earlier, he had celebrated his high school graduation.
He had begun university with plans for a career in medicine.
At just 20 years old, Pierre Damas Bel's journey ended before he could fulfill that dream.
