Police said a 17-year-old boy chased Dogan down and held him until officers arrived, despite allegedly being pepper-sprayed during the confrontation.
A jewelry transaction arranged through Facebook Marketplace ended in an arrest in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood after a teenage bystander intervened.
According to Miami police, the incident happened at around 6 p.m. on August 6 near Brickell Avenue and Southeast 14th Street.
Police identified the suspect as 21-year-old Yagiz Dogan.
Jewelry Sale Turned Into a Police Case
Investigators said the woman had listed two bracelets for sale on Facebook Marketplace and arranged to meet Dogan, who had reportedly expressed interest in buying them.
During the meeting, the woman handed Dogan the bracelets so he could examine them.
Police allege Dogan then ran away with the jewelry.
The woman’s calls for help caught the attention of a 17-year-old boy nearby, who began chasing the suspect.
Teenager Kept Chasing Despite Pepper Spray
The teenager eventually caught up with Dogan.
According to police, Dogan pepper-sprayed the 17-year-old during the confrontation. The teenager, however, continued to pursue him and ultimately managed to restrain Dogan.
He held the suspect on the ground until Miami police officers arrived.
People at the scene reportedly helped the teenager wash his face after he was exposed to the pepper spray. He was also treated following the incident.
Miami Police spokesperson Michael Vega praised the teenager’s actions but cautioned members of the public about intervening in similar situations because a fleeing suspect could potentially be armed.
Bracelets Recovered From Bag
Police said officers searched Dogan’s bag and recovered the two bracelets allegedly belonging to the woman.
The owner, identified by local media as Yuriko Torres, said the jewelry was worth thousands of dollars and described the teenager who intervened as her “hero.”
Police Link Dogan to Earlier $15,000 Diamond Ring Case
The investigation also brought attention to a separate case involving Dogan just weeks earlier.
According to Miami police records cited by local media, another woman arranged to meet Dogan on July 18 after advertising a diamond ring for sale through Facebook Marketplace.
The meeting reportedly took place outside a bank on Brickell Avenue.
Police allege the woman handed Dogan the diamond ring and its certificate so he could inspect them. Dogan then allegedly ran away with both.
The ring was reportedly valued at approximately $15,000.
Authorities said Dogan faces separate allegations in connection with that incident.
$11,000 Bond Set
Following the latest incident, Dogan was charged with offenses including grand theft and battery, according to local reports.
A judge reportedly set his bond at $11,000.
WSVN reported that Dogan posted bond but remained in custody Friday afternoon while authorities completed the process of fitting him with an electronic ankle monitor.
The criminal allegations against Dogan have not been proven in court, and the legal proceedings remain ongoing.
