She was born on April 12, 1979, in Istanbul. Erkan completed her secondary education at Istanbul Erkek High School, one of the country’s most respected academic institutions. She later graduated with top honors from Boğaziçi University, earning a degree in Industrial Engineering.
Following her undergraduate studies, Erkan moved to the United States to pursue advanced education. She completed her PhD in Operations Research and Financial Engineering at Princeton University, where she focused on risk management, quantitative finance, and complex financial systems.
Erkan began her professional career at Goldman Sachs, where she worked for nearly a decade in senior analytical and managerial roles. She later joined First Republic Bank, rising rapidly within the institution. During her tenure, she served as President, Co-Chief Executive Officer, and a member of the bank’s board of directors. Her work focused on investment strategy, risk management, and large-scale financial operations.
In addition to her banking career, Erkan served on the boards of several global corporations, including Tiffany & Co. and Marsh McLennan.
In June 2023, she was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, becoming the first woman in the institution’s history to hold the position. Her appointment drew international attention due to her global financial experience and academic background. She served in the role until February 2024.
